Gabriel
I caught up with her in the elevator, wedging my way in just before the doors slid shut. Charly leaned against the back wall, face expressionless. I, however, could just barely keep from grabbing her by the throat.
"What was that?"
"None of your business," she gritted out, staring right through me.
The elevator whirred upward.
"Why is that guy following you?" And how the fuck could he dare touch her? How could this shitty little wannabe secret agent have the gall to even approach her? How close had they been? Just the idea of the two of them being together made my vision turn scarlet.
"None of your business," Charly repeated, holding onto her bag.
"It is very much my business if some random asshole ambushes you in front of the office."
That came out a lot harsher than intended. And it wasn't me at all. Gabriel Renard was collected and in control. Gabriel Renard hadn't built a multi-million-dollar empire by losing his countenance in the face of interpersonal drama. Gabriel Renard didn't snap.
Now I would have liked to smash the elevator to smithereens.
"Oh yeah? Why would you care?" Charly asked, quite justifiably. Her voice trembled. "You better tell me why it takes a giant paranormal lumberjack and a freakinâ corporate Vampire to show up and save me like Iâm some stupid princess? What kind of fuck up is that?"
She glared at me, eyes ready to fire lasers. And then suddenly, as the elevator stopped and the doors slid open, they filled up with water. Shimmered, overflowed, and then angry tears dripping down.
Charly cupped her mouth in her hand and suppressed a furious sob, nevertheless glaring at me.
Damn, it was always the same with women and tears, wasnât it? Made you feel like an asshole every time. I managed to swallow my childish jealousy.
"Come with me," I said, nudging her gently out of the elevator and into the lobby. Anny's blonde mop of hair shot out from behind the reception counter.
"Everything okay, boss?" she gushed as I led Charly past the counter.
"Not in the least, Anny. Would you be so kind as to round up Felix? We've got a little situation here."
I smiled sourly as we passed and led Charly into one of the empty conference rooms, for confidentiality reasons the only room around here that wasn't made entirely of glass.
"Sit down," I said, leaving the door slightly open. Charly flopped into one of the office chairs. She curled up, holding her bag in front of her body like a shield. With one hand she wiped away some tears. Razor blades bit into my heart. That damned bastard Smith!
I settled down on a chair next to her, unsure what to do. This alone was infuriating. I always knew what to do. Always had a plan. Now, however...
"Sorry..." said Charly muffled into her bag. "I didn't mean to yell at you. You can go now."
"Yeah, sure," I grumbled. I wasn't going anywhere until this was settled.
She sank down onto her bag like into a big pillow, hiding her face, and I just sat there, the most helpless fool in the universe.
